Arattupuzha Temple in ThrissurArattupuzha Temple is a renowned temple which is more than 3000 years old built in the Thrissur city. Arattupuzha Pooram festival which is an ancient festival of Kerala is celebrated in this temple with great pomp in the month of April and May and on a large scale with full rituals.
This temple is situated in a village of Thrissur district which is around 15 kms from Thrissur town.
Festivals at Arattupuzha Temple in ThrissurThe ancient festival of Kerala called Arattupuzha pooram is celebrated at this temple. People from neighbour villages reach the temple at the time of festival during the month of April and May. The main events and the maximum excitement is on the last two days. One day prior to the last day there is an assembly held which comprises of elephants as the main part of the ceremony called Sasthavinte. Traditional lamps with huge lamps and lightening are held by the localities of the town known as theevetti.
The atmosphere looks absolutely lightened up; after this ceremony is over, around 50 elephants along with other elephants who carry the deities from various villages would form a line in front of the cheering crowd in the field for a grand view of the festival. It’s absolutely delightful to watch these elephants carrying glittering umbrellas called muthukkudas.
The Panchavadyam, Pacharimelam and the Pandimelam play the best traditional beats for the crowd present there for entertainment. Then after the sun rise the elephants who were carrying the deities from the nearby villages and temples gather all together at another temple called Sree Sastha for another ceremony held near a river known as Aaratuceremony. In this ceremony the temple idol is completely immersed in the river along with flower offering and mantra chanting. Lord Ayyapa then presides the idol of Sree Sastha temple at Arattupuzha Temple.
How to Reach Arattupuzha Temple in ThrissurBy Airways - The international airport at Cochin is located about 40 kms from the temple, so via national highway 47 you travel easily as its attended by many airlines at regular intervals and also this nearest airport to the temple.
By Road - If you want to travel by road then you can take the bus from Irinjalakuda which is connected to other cities of Thrissur.
By Train - Railway Station called Pudukad is situated around 5 km from here and another railway station known as Wadakanchery Railway Station in Shoranur Railway Junction line is located about 31 Km from here.
