Thrissur ZooThe Thrissur Zoo opened up in 1885 making it one of the oldest of zoos in India. It is spread over an area of 13.5 acres of land and houses several types of animals, birds, reptiles, insects etc. The zoo has a very calming atmosphere and is plush with greenery. It lies in the heart of the city and just a two-minute walk away from the main town.
The various animals that are present here include Bengal tigers, Asiatic lions, spotted deers, hippopotamuses, several breeds of monkeys, camels, alligators, leopards, the sloth bears, lion tailed macaques, hundreds of bird species including beautiful pink flamingos, pelicans, peacocks etc. The zoo also has a dedicated snake park which is one of its main features. This park contains King Cobras, pythons, Kraits, Vipers and Rat Snakes.
The zoo serves as a great educational experience for kids who can not just get first hand glimpses of rare wild animals but also read and learn about them thanks to the various placards placed at the zoo with each one detailing every single animals species. The animals here are apparently extremely photogenic and some even display the nature of posing for a photograph!
A botanical garden is also a part of the zoo where rare and exotic plants as well as some common ones are on display. Several trees line up the avenues inside the garden and it is somewhat comparable to Bangalore's Lal Bagh and one can easily enjoy a quite afternoon of picnic at these gardens.
There is also a museum that is attached to the zoo and houses several traditional Keralite artifacts such as Kathakali figurines, metal sculptures, ancient pieces of jewelry, old traditional kerala lamps, other historic relics, statues of old personalities, small ancient rocks, taxidermy butterflies etc. There is also a botanical garden here that houses some rare species of plants as well as a natural history museum.
Plans to expand the zoo are underway where it will go from being a 13 acre land to a 306 one. This will allow for the animals to have more space to live in and also allow for other animals to be housed here.
The zoo is closed on Mondays and operates between 9 am and 5 pm.
